What is a Digital Twin?

Digital Twins are digital copies of real life objects, people, or systems. It can
simulate behavior and is helpful in understanding how the real world works.
Since digital twins are linked to real life objects, people, or systems, they
are updated in real time to reflect their real life counterparts. Interconnecting
a bunch of digital twins into one system can form a Metaverse. A Metaverse is a
digital, usually immersive environment which can be used as a simulator for
organization, planning, and decision making.

History of the Digital Twin

Digital twins have been a concept practiced since the 1960 but is commonly thought
to be developed in 2002. In 2002 the concept gained lots of attention after Micheal
Grieves hosted a presentation at the university of Michigan on technology. During
the time NASA was developing the space program, they would develop a basic idea of
the digital twin. NASA used this digital twin to examine and simulate situations
aboard the Apollo 13. This would come in handy as NASA needed to rescue the crew of
the Apollo 13. Since they had a digital twin of the Apollo 13, they were able to
simulate and test ways of saving the crew without having to leave Earth. Digital Twins
are now more virtual than simulations. Recently, in 2017 digital twins have become a
popular technology trend.

What is the Digital Twin used for?

Digital twins are used in many different fields. Some fields that use digital twins are
the medical field, manufacturing field, construction field, and many more. Digital twins
help with medical care by simulating a hospital’s operations, medical staff, and organization.
This technology can also help with health care by modeling patients needs and simulating ways
to help them. Hospitals can watch the simulation and learn what they are doing right and what
they can improve on. In manufacturing, digital twins can be used to simulate product creation.
Using this, companies can find out the best way to manufacture their products. In construction,
digital twins can be used to design cities and buildings to find the most optimized structure.
